ITINERARY FOR AUFDERHEIDE TRIP
October 1, 2005

The approach we are using for this trip begins with traveling I5 from Albany to South of Eugene. Watch for the exit to OAKRIDGE. Turn onto this exit and follow the highway to the small community of WESTFIR. We will turn off there and the mile indicators we are using match our odometer. If you wish to go on into Oakridge for coffee or gas, then come back to the exit for Westfir to begin the trip.

74 miles from Albany - turn left on Westfir exit. You may notice a Forest Service Building to your right - it's closed on Sat & Sun.

Follow the signs through to Westfir -you will cross the river right away over a bridge and meet a secondary turnoff from Oakridge to Westfir. Turn left on to the road and go on - the road follows the river here and there may be spots you would like to check out for photos. Some trees are changing color along this area of the river.

After 2 and ¼ miles you will see a bright red covered bridge in the town of Westfir. There are restrooms there and a parking lot so you can take shots of the river and bridge if you wish. The bridge has a separate covered walkway. Continue upstream past this bridge - don't take road to Oakridge.

3.6miles -Marker on the right side welcomes you to Aufderheide Forest drive. Check along here for color.

5 miles - a bridge over the stream that will allow you to pull off and check for color and water scenes.

7.3 miles - another bridge opportunity

10.3 miles - Huckleberry Flats - A railroad Incline with snubber at the top of the hill. Signs describing the old logging railroad. A point of interest, but not much for photos.
Many rock formations along the river above this point.
Individual trees changing color are along the road for 10 miles or so.

22.4 miles Kiahanie Campground - possible place for lunch if we all wish to eat there.

Not too much of interest in the next 10 miles or so, but it could have changed since last week.

34.8 miles - Reach the Monument to Aufderheide - Turn right on to side road (gravel) to Skookum Creek Trail head. The parking lot is at 38.4 miles and that is where we took pictures of the maples that we sent along with the email announcement about this trip. There are several places along this road that have interesting color changes, and we can take our time here. Return to main road.

42.2 miles (Including drive out to trailhead) Box Canyon camp - another possible for lunch, if we are too early for the other site.

42.5 miles - Landis Cabin Trail - short walk down into a meadow where a replica cabin has been built. A pleasant place to wander and take pictures.

44 miles - have traveled over the low pass and last week the color began to disappear at this point. We don't know what changes may have occurred in a week.

46.2 miles - Roaring river Camp - closed. Frissel Crossing at Olallie may be an interesting spot.

50.5 miles - Homestead Camp - open there is a little color along here

53 miles - Red Diamond Camp -open

54 miles - Rebel Trail head - some color and the river here

57.1 miles - French Pete Camp - open - stream along road - no color last week

58.6 miles - Slide Creek Camp - open- along stream

60.4 miles - Cougar Reservoir - restrooms - water is low now - below the dam there are interesting views of the rocks

68.2 miles - intersection with Hwy 126 - can turn either left to Eugene or right to Mackenzie and Clear Lake. We turned toward Eugene and saw several river rafting groups. There is also the Goodpasture Covered Bridge at 86 miles.

I'm sure there are good pictures along HWY 126 toward the South Santiam Pass. Everyone will have to decide which route when we get there.
